What is the difference between a "public accountant" and a "certified public accountant"? Public accountant signifies a lower tier of qualification in accountancy. Certified Public Accountant is the statutory title of qualified accountants in the United States who have passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination and have met additional state education and experience requirements for certification as a CPA. In most U.S. states, only CPAs who are licensed are able to provide the public with attestation (including auditing) opinions on financial statements. Essentially, CPAs are qualified to provide assistance with all aspects of accounting.

Exactly what is accountancy? Accountancy is the measurement, disclosure or provision of assurance about financial information that helps managers, investors, tax authorities and other decision makers make resource allocation decisions.
